What is Sciatica?
Each of us have a sciatic nerve that starts at your spinal column at the pelvis and runs down each leg. In fact it is the longest and largest nerve in our bodies. From the spinal column it branches into five offshoots that serve your thigh, knee, calf, ankle and foot. Now you can see why it causes so much misery to sciatica suffers.
What Causes Sciatica?
1- Slipped or herniated disc
2- An accident
3- Falling down.
These are the most common reasons.
What Triggers Sciatic Pain?
It is funny. Most times it is not what you might think it would be. For example it could be as simple as:
1- Bending over to tie your shoe
2-Sneezing
3- Coughing
4- Twisting the wrong way
5- Being overweight
6- Incorrectly doing certain exercises
What Are The Common Treatments For Sciatica?
While many orthopedic surgeons may suggest surgery, epidural shots or heavy pain medication, chiropractors have had success without resorting to these.
The key to success?
Early diagnosis and treatment. Many times sciatica begins with lower back pain. Sometimes people will ignore this until it builds and builds and builds and then the traditional "sciatica" numbness sensations are felt in the buttocks, leg and feet.
Sensations may vary from a dull throb or ache all the way to shooting sharp pain. If ignored permanent nerve damage could result.
Here is The Million Dollar Question Then...
Will you come in for chiropractic treatment as soon as you feel the discomfort? Or will you wait until the pain is a screaming 11 on a scale of 1-10?
